Open almost any book on Soho and this near-century-old institution probably gets several paragraphs. Occupying a fine Georgian townhouse once home to the Duke of Portland, its black-painted frontage is surmounted by a giant snail above which fly the French Tricolor and the Union Flag. The menu is based on bourgeois French cuisine, although not all is recognisably so, as the grilled pork cutlet with papaya testifies. Expect a warming celeriac and truffle soup starter, then a main of duck confit, rainbow chard, chilli and ginger, or lobster thermidor. Oh yes, and snails. For dessert, try pear-based tarte Bourdaloue.
