Down a Dickensian alley near Liverpool Street station, this Boisdale occupies an atmospheric vaulted basement. The soundtrack is live jazz, and the cooking is simple, classic stuff founded on thoroughbred – often Scottish – meats and seafood, so starters predictably include smoked salmon, or roast Blackface haggis – the range broadened by seared hand-dived Scottish scallop with glazed Gloucestershire pork belly, carrot purée and black pudding. Main courses include prime steaks with béarnaise, along with roast chicken breast, butternut squash purée, confit garlic, rosemary polenta and pickled blackberries. Finish with coffee and vanilla mousse, shaved Valrhona chocolate and warm cinnamon sugared doughnuts.
