Hearty food in centuries-old inn

On the banks of the River Fylde, this 17th-century coaching inn is enlivened by local artists’ work and the owners’ eye-catching memorabilia. The menu revels in Lancashire’s fine produce, bringing it together in imaginative ideas that aim to comfort rather than challenge: a starter of lobster and squid ink ravioli is matched with white and green asparagus and oyster velouté, followed by a rib-sticking suet pudding packed with oxtail and beef skirt cooked in real ale and served with creamy mash and lashings of red wine gravy. For pudding, there’s a rich chocolate pavé alongside a cup of coffee ice cream and foam.
