The Wellington, on Welwyn's pretty high street, is an old coaching inn with rustic-chic exposed brick walls, real fires and a bar stocked with proper beers. The focus is firmly on the gastro side of the pub spectrum, with a simple, unpretentious menu. You might start with crispy duck and hoi sin dumpling, or go for one of the daily specials such as crab and tarragon bonbons with samphire, radish, cucumber and tarragon oil. Next up, a fillet burger, fish pie, or something a little more adventurous such as braised ox cheek with an oxtail lollipop.
