The heavily timbered Feathers is a wonderful slice of Tudor England, its oak-panelled venerability thrown into relief by a modern brasserie named after the hop variety Fuggles, and an upmarket dining room, Quills. Look for the likes of lamb kidneys in smoked paprika and sherry cream to start, or scallops with pork scratchings and apple, prior to well-rendered turbot on crab and spring onion risotto with courgette ribbons in shellfish sauce. Sirloins and fillets of local beef are a big draw, as are sweet things such as an ingenious bread-and-butter pudding made with pain au chocolat, served with salt caramel ice cream and chocolate sauce - an absolute treat.
