A proper pub with fine local ales, the Thomas Lord has a shabby-chic charm, kitted out with rustic pine tables, well-worn oak parquet floors, church pews and a chesterfield sofa. On the food front, everything is made in-house, the garden supplies seasonal goodies, and the majority of materials come from small-scale local producers and farmers. The kitchen deals in good wholesome fare – a starter of sweet potato soup with sage crumble and a brioche bun – and some more inventive ideas, as in a main course of slow-cooked duck leg, pickled rhubarb and hasselback potatoes. For afters, there's a well-crafted rum baba with pineapple carpaccio and Chantilly cream.
