An ivy-clad Georgian inn at the heart of a village community near Winchester, The King's Head has a lightly worn touch of refinement, with candlesticks on wooden tables, equestrian prints, tartan banquette, and a menu of sound, regionally based cooking. Full-flavoured calves' liver terrine punctuated with green peppercorns, given edge with golden beetroot and orange, precedes a great piece of well-timed venison haunch with puréed squash, spiced onion rings and Jerusalem artichoke crisps, or sea bass and tiger prawns with smoked haddock fishcake in lemon-dill hollandaise. Sticky toffee pudding arrives as a slab of purest indulgence, with rich vanilla ice cream.
