Hurstbourne Tarrant now has its 16th-century coaching inn back, following its long and sympathetic renovation. Its light and airy, low-ceilinged spaces, bare tables and fires provide just the right setting for an essentially British menu of pub favourites and more innovative dishes. Look for tea-smoked duck breast, wilted spinach, shallots and Jerusalem artichoke purée as a starter. Try a main course of baked cod (fish arrives daily from Cornwall) with Old Winchester cheese rarebit, poached potatoes, mange-touts and dill white wine sauce. Follow with a dessert of chocolate brownie, white chocolate and wasabi ice cream. Wines are the head chef's special project, so try something a little different.
