Classical cooking not far from the setting for Downton Abbey

The Dew Pond was once a pair of 16th-century drovers' cottages, now welded into a very chic, pastel-hued country restaurant, not far from Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey off the telly). The cooking is founded on classical principles with the sort of personal overlay that has won many local devotees. An exemplary souffle of Keen's cheddar with rocket and spring onion cream sauce is an accomplished opener, and might be followed by roasted sea bream with grilled tiger prawns, ratatouille and saffron potatoes. For dessert there may be that old standby, sticky toffee with praline ice cream.
