The fireplace just inside the entrance once provided instant defrosting for travellers who had braved the horse-drawn carriage transfer from the railway station. Such is the Crown's history, which extends from 15th-century beginnings to a late Victorian makeover. Its panelled dining room with mint-green chairs makes a refreshing space today for contemporary brasserie cooking, opening with that modern classic, a Scotch egg fashioned of smoked haddock around a soft-cooked egg, served with good tartare dressing. After that, there might be pan-roasted duck breast in bitter orange sauce with wilted spinach, and a successful finishing combination of dark chocolate fondant and pistachio ice-cream.
