Modernised British dishes in a medieval house

A beautiful half-timbered building dating from 1450, The Chesil Rectory is the oldest house in Winchester. Enter through a low door to be greeted by a brilliantly preserved interior with low beams, charming inglenook fireplaces and exposed brickwork, and a quirky collection of taxidermy. The kitchen puts a gently modernised spin onto classic British dishes, bolstered by some that have nothing to do with the native repertoire, as in a starter of rosemary gnocchi with charred onions, artichokes and the crunch of hazelnuts. Among main courses, sticky glazed beef short rib and steamed sea bass with local mushrooms hit the spot.
