The 16th-century Anchor has all the elements of a traditional country inn down to its low beams, walls full of pictures and double-sided bar. It's a popular spot, attracting not just drinkers, but also takers for a wide-ranging menu displaying high levels of culinary skill and ingenuity. Pub stalwarts of fish and chips are there, but so too is excellent hogget done three ways, with imam bayaldi, apricot and pine nuts, a goats' cheese cigar and roast garlic purée. That might follow a simple sauté of wild mushrooms with a crisped egg and watercress. Inventive desserts include custard tart served with smoked brown sugar ice cream.
