Unpretentious cooking in grand New Forest manor house

Burley Manor was built in 1852 by a magistrate and custodian of the surrounding New Forest. A hotel since the 1930s and refurbished in 2015, this grand former home enjoys fabulous parkland views and a peaceful patio for pre-meal drinks. In the restaurant, the menu has Mediterranean influences, with selected dishes cooked in a wood-fired oven. The cooking is unfussy and ingredient-driven – pan-fried squid, rocket and chilli might precede a simple main course of roasted lemon sole, beetroot, leaves and polenta chips. To cap a meal, try fig and almond tart and spiced cardamom crème fraîche.
