A grand Edwardian pile in charming grounds, this classy hotel restaurant has plenty of period elegance, with oak panels and tables dressed in white linen cloths. Its upmarket brasserie-style fare contains regional ingredients and global influences. Start with pan-seared scallops with parsnip purée and a dressing combining apples and roasted hazelnuts, and follow on with Owtons of Hampshire saddle of venison with fondant potato and a fig and juniper berry sauce. There is a burger, too, and monkfish wrapped in nori. Finish with a fun dessert such as iced prosecco and rhubarb parfait with spiced ginger biscuits and a bag of delicious custard doughnuts.
