Originally a collection of fishermen's cottages on the Dyfi estuary, the Penhelig Arms overlooks what centuries ago was a shipbuilding harbour. Its two blue-themed dining areas - the Fisherman's Bar and the restaurant - share a menu, backed up by specials. The maritime location might suggest launching with flash-fried calamari, lemon mayo and dressed leaves, followed perhaps by pork two ways - just-pink loin cutlet and slow-roasted belly - with green beans, Pembrokeshire new potatoes, roasted apple and sage. The Bakewell tart owes little to school dinners of yesteryear: surely it was never served, as here, with toasted almonds, raspberry coulis and vanilla pod ice cream?
