The restaurant at this imposing white mansion is named after the portraitist Mary Beale, whose works hang on the walls. It is a stylish room, with well-spaced tables and huge windows looking over the surrounding parkland, and the kitchen team cooks in confident, unfussy style. Salt beef croquettes with pea purée and pea shoots is an impressive starter, followed by pan-fried plaice glazed in honey and served with a salad of pickled cucumber, rocket, tomatoes and Jersey Royals or venison haunch steak with bubble-and-squeak, crushed swede and cherry jus. To finish, try the trio of blueberry frangipane tart, raspberry cheesecake and blackberry pannacotta.
