This perennially popular neighbourhood restaurant stands out in the parade of shops near Kew Gardens tube station. From the same stable as the equally high-achieving Chez Bruce in Wandsworth and La Trompette in Chiswick, its pedigree shines through from the off, with unshowy neutral tones, textured walls, white linen, polished-wood floors and colourful abstract artworks giving the space a smart modern sheen. But the main draw here is classy contemporary European cooking that hits the high notes without seeming to try too hard, with head chef Gregory Wellman leading the team in producing prettily presented dishes high on precision, flavour and intelligent simplicity. An eye-catching starter makes its mark, teaming glazed ox cheek with crisp polenta, mushroom purée, pickled red onion and bacon jam. Big, gutsy flavours are similarly on song in main-course lamb rump and belly highlighted with baby artichokes, potato gnocchi, anchovy, rosemary and garlic. Dessert is equally impressive: creamy malt custard with almond ice cream and cocoa nib. The wine list is a corker, and lunch a steal for cooking of this level.
