The Close Hotel is a handsome 16th-century pile, boasting period details and contemporary elegance. There are two dining options in the form of a brasserie and fine-dining restaurant. Any sense of old-school solidity is avoided by painting the panels in restful, fashionable shades and keeping the tables free of heavy linen (the Adam ceiling remains to impress traditionalists). The modern British menu strikes the right balance in this setting. Begin with a creative combination of butter-poached langoustine tails with wild rice, move on to duck breast paired with pear and gingerbread, and finish with white chocolate 'fondant' with a hit of vodka.
