Brothers Paul and Chris Charalambous recently celebrated a decade since they opened their slick bistro in Glasgow's bohemian West End, adjacent to the city's world-famous Botanical Gardens. Cail Bruich means 'eat well' and it would be hard not to at this family-run restaurant where artisan producers supply the kitchen with seasonal, predominantly local ingredients. A recent refurbishment with low-slung copper lights, red leather banquettes and unclothed dark wood tables has also resulted in a new kitchen that is open to the dining room, adding to the theatre of a meal here. The modern European cooking is delivered via a trio of menu formats, from a well-priced market formula, upgrading to the carte and tasting menu with optional wines to match. Whichever route you take, there's vibrant, inventive cooking and sound technique, as demonstrated in a memorable starter of salmon with its accompanying crab, cucumber, baked lemon and avocado. Next up, a honey-glazed breast and crispy leg of Gressingham duck is in the company of spiced date and chicory, or, if fish is your thing, a precisely cooked fillet of stone bass appears alongside violet artichokes, fennel, shrimp and brown butter. Dessert brings rhubarb cheesecake, pink peppercorn, yogurt and sorrel.
