Assured modern cooking in an old pub

In the business of serving food and ale for 450 years, the weatherboarded Hoop has an atmospheric pub on the ground floor - acres of beams, draught ales at the bar - and an upstairs restaurant opened up to the rafters to create a more refined setting amid the exposed oak. The kitchen turns out modern food that wouldn't look out of place on the menu of a city brasserie: panko-crusted goats' cheese bonbons with caponata, for example, as a starter. Main courses might deliver venison and haggis Wellington with pickled and salt-baked beetroot and creamed potato. Finish with citrus bread pudding with home-made orange ice cream.
