Shortly before the road ends at the River Crouch is this thoroughly modern gastro pub where, if the weather's kind, you can sit outside in the extensive gardens with something grilled, a salad or just a sandwich. Otherwise, head for the restaurant, designed for lingering over a decent three-course meal. Try roasted hand-dived scallops with crispy suckling pig and apple purée, followed by tandoori-roast monkfish with masala potatoes and spinach, or duck cottage pie with wild mushrooms, pumpkin jam and chestnuts. Custard tart with grated nutmeg makes for a good dessert, but you might go for British cheeses with biscuits, pickled onions, grapes and piccalilli, or have both.
