A short stroll from the railway station and city centre, the County Hotel has a cheery modern style, as typified in the Samphire restaurant, where oak floors and leather seats in summery pastel hues of mustard, mint and tangerine add colour to the neutral contemporary decor. Uncomplicated modern European cooking is the kitchen's stock-in-trade, starting with duck and ham hock terrine with pickled mushrooms, spiced apricot chutney and toasted walnut bread. Mains might bring lamb cutlets with Puy lentils, spinach and a zesty burst of gremolata. For dessert, there could be chocolate and Amaretto fondant with clotted cream ice cream.
