Gutsy cooking in a buzzy brasserie

The brasserie has been a fixture of the local dining scene for almost 30 years. Its setting may be a 16th-century timbered house, but there's nothing old-style about the approach. The mood is laid-back and cosmopolitan and the one-off decor is akin to an eclectic art gallery done out with antique linen-clothed tables. Smart complex modern food is the deal, opening with a cake of blue crab, brown shrimps and lime, garnished with pickled sweetcorn and lotus root salad, before braised breast and seared saddle of excellent salt marsh lamb with houmous and sauce vièrge. Finish with Amarena cherry and almond tart and vanilla ice cream.
