Calling all plane spotting foodies: both of your interests can be indulged in one fell swoop at the fifth-floor 1935 Restaurant overlooking the aviation action at Southend Airport. Naturally enough, soundproofing is of the highest order, and there's a real sense of occasion in the slick contemporary space when you look through the full-length glass windows and the runway lights put on a show in the evening. The kitchen deals in unpretentious classic and modern ideas, taking off with pork sliders or tempura king prawns, followed by dry-aged steaks cooked on the grill, traditional fish and chips, or wild mushroom risotto.
