Victorian baroque grand dining

The Café Royal's Victorian-baroque interiors simply cry out to be the scene of grand dining with their gilt pillars, panelled ceilings and stained windows. These days, traditional Scots fare mingles with modern thinking on menus that open with oysters on mounds of crushed ice, but get into their stride with mussels in Thai broth, and a sweetly alluring main course of duck breast and confit leg on sticky red cabbage with sweet potato purée in port jus. Fish might be straightforward baked cod with asparagus in hollandaise, or monkfish in Goan-style coconut curry. A layered torte of salted caramel on chocolate biscuit base is well complemented by its benchmark vanilla ice.
