Victorian archaeologist General Augustus Pitt-Rivers was responsible for the Oxford museum collection that bears his name, and for extending the partly thatched Museum Inn. While there is a solid pub foundation to proceedings with ham hock terrine with red onion chutney and toast, there are also excursions over the Channel for pheasant Normandy-style, braised in local cider, or into Med territory for aubergine and feta schnitzel on red pepper coulis. Fish specials from the day-boats are chalked on the board, and a section of standards offers smoked haddock and salmon fish pie with gruyère-gratinated mash, or honey-mustard glazed ham and chips. Dessert might be rice pudding ritzed up with passionfruit.
