Hotel du Vin's Poole outpost is a bit of a landmark just off the quayside, a creeper-covered Georgian mansion. As expected, the kitchen deals in crowd-pleasing brasserie staples from over the Channel, all cooked just so. Start perhaps with crab toasts with sliced radish and black pepper mayonnaise, escargots in classic garlic and herb butter, or onion soup, and proceed to steak frites, pink-roast rump of lamb with broccoli and boulangère potatoes with chorizo, or sole meunière. Puddings are as Gallic as the rest of the package, among them Paris-Brest and tarte au citron, although bread-and-butter pudding flavoured with rum and banana may please patriots.
