This sparkling-white meringue of a building stands above the bay at Mortehoe on the north Devon coast, with views across to Lundy. An enterprising fixed-price menu may lead you from smoked pigeon breast with a game sausage, Savoy cabbage purée and salt-baked beetroot to well-seasoned and carefully timed plaice fillets in herb sauce with diced fried potatoes and bacon and hazelnut dressing, or perhaps a serving of Exmoor sirloin with a dinky steak-and-tongue pudding and truffled mash. Simple but boldly flavoured desserts encompass the likes of apple and vanilla delice with blackcurrant sorbet, or a pairing of pannacotta and zabaglione with plum compôte.
