With the River Dart in sight, it's refreshing to see an emphasis on locally-caught, fresh fish in the first-floor dining room of this 17th-century quayside hotel, while die-hard carnivores will find no fault with the prime slabs of British beef and Devon lamb on offer. There is nothing here to challenge, just generous, satisfying dishes with all the right accents, whether it's organic, home-cured salmon with herb aïoli, cucumber jelly and shaved fennel, or perfectly-timed brill with lentils, olives, sun-dried tomatoes and potatoes. Local meat fans might find pan-seared loin of lamb with glazed sweetbreads, carrot and ginger purée and mashed potato.
