Tucked away in the oldest part of Plymouth, ancient beams bear witness to this building's antiquity. The up-to-date cooking is built on seasonal West Country produce, so start with pan-fried scallops with crispy black pudding fritters and celeriac purée, or perhaps duck liver parfait, rillettes and crackling with pear pickle and brioche. Creedy Carver duck also stars in a main course, supported by red cabbage, caramelised parsnips, fondant potatoes and rich gravy, while local boats supply the goodies for a multi-layered dish comprising plaice fillets with sea spinach, crisp Exmouth mussels, seaweed gnocchi, citrus-pickled fennel and mussel bisque. To finish, nougat and white chocolate parfait comes with raspberry sorbet.
