This 18th-century Georgian mansion set in 80 acres of glorious grounds is a quintessentially English set-up brought into the 21st century with a sprinkle of boutique style and great food served in an elegant dining room to seal the deal. Begin with watercress soup, salt-cod beignet and aïoli, although the River Exe mussels with white wine and garlic cream is another diverting starter. Follow, perhaps, with roasted rump of grass-fed Devon lamb, smoked aubergine, wild garlic and sweetbread. Finish with a moreish dessert of dark chocolate brownie with hazelnut praline and salted caramel ice cream, or maybe pick from a selection of perfectly kept West Country cheeses.
