Set in 20 acres of lush Devon countryside, the 18th-century stone manor trades these days as a classy country-house hotel with an impressive restaurant. There’s a reassuringly traditional polish inside, backed by a service team who match the charm of the setting. Fine West Country ingredients lead the charge on an enticing menu in the modern country-house mould. Pork belly with black pudding mousse, apple chutney, parsnip purée and green apple sauce shows the style, moving on to main-course Devon Red Ruby beef with boulangère potatoes, woodland mushrooms, watercress purée and beef gravy. For pud, perhaps vanilla pannacotta with rhubarb jelly and sorbet.
