Grand-hotel dining on the English Riviera

AA Inspector

At a glance

Open all year
Private dining
Wines by the glass

Occupying a prime position on Torquay's seafront, the Grand certainly has presence, built in Victorian times and expanding as the popularity of the English Riviera grew. The main dining option is the 1881 Restaurant, its genteel formality in keeping with its august past (Agatha Christie spent her honeymoon here). The menu sticks to traditional ideas with just enough contemporary thrust to satisfy both schools. Start with celeriac and apple soup, or dressed crab salad fired up with wasabi, and move onto pan-fried sea bass with king prawns and pearl barley. There are steaks cooked on the grill, and, for dessert, lemon posset comes with shortbread, candied lemons and berry compôte.
