Confident modern cooking in a Gothic hotel

AA Inspector

At a glance

Private dining
Wines by the glass
Wheelchair access

Despite the castellated walls, this imposing Gothic building has always been about hospitality, and there is no lack of character or charm in the restaurant, with its moulded ceilings and panelled walls. The kitchen takes a more contemporary position, but a reassuringly gentle one. Chicken liver parfait, honey granola, toast and red onion marmalade is one way to begin, perhaps followed by Brixham hake, Cornish new potatoes, samphire, pak choi, chorizo and pickled mussels. Desserts such as Piña Colada, coconut parfait, pineapple salsa, rum granita show off good technical skills, and there is a strong showing of West Country cheeses.
