Bistro food in a Tudor gunnery tower

A 16th-century circular gunnery tower on Plymouth waterfront, be sure to grip the handrail tight as you climb the spiral staircase. Arched windows that once served as gun emplacements in three-foot walls surround the dining space, where simple modern bistro food is the drill. Expect Mediterranean fish soup and harissa to start, or game terrine in cider sauce, as lead-ins to substantial main dishes of peppered venison loin with cranberry and orange compôte, duck breast and confit leg with quince, or roasted pollack with crab gratin and spinach, sauced in white wine. Finish with chocolate nemesis and chocolate sorbet, or wait 20 minutes for freshly baked cherry frangipane tart with Amaretto ice cream.
