In the heart of Bowness-on-Windermere, this low-roofed white-fronted old house has seating on two floors, a heated roof terrace and a summer garden, the main room done up in red and gold with mirrors, black napery and crystal light fixtures. The food is an eclectic mix of European and Asian influences amid more straightforward fare. First up, a classic twice-baked Cumbrian cheddar soufflé, offset by a white wine and chive sauce, cherry tomatoes and rocket. Mains include the 'pig plate': slow-cooked belly, pulled pork bubble-and-squeak and pigs in blankets, garnished with apple purée and creamy mustard sauce. Finish with chocolate ganache cake, salted caramel, popcorn and richly flavoured vanilla ice cream.
