Unpretentious dining in an old coaching inn

AA Inspector

At a glance

Wines by the glass
Wheelchair access
Credit cards accepted

An 18th-century coaching inn with a proper bar complete with real ales and snug. Grab a table by the fire in the bar, or head on through to the slightly more refined restaurant - the menu is the same throughout. Expect dishes that reflect the easy-going pub setting but don't lack ambition. A starter of braised pig's cheek with Bury black pudding and caramelised apples is soft, sweet and tender in all the right places, or go for shallot tarte Tatin with glazed goats' cheese. Follow with lightly-battered king prawns with hand-cut chips, or a Med-inspired baked fillet of turbot, and finish with a spot-on crème brûlée.
