This classic stone-built Lakeland house sits amid four acres in the village of Rosthwaite in the gorgeous Borrowdale Valley. The drill is a daily-changing four-course menu, with a cheeseboard as optional extra. Spring might bring on a short-pastried warm goats' cheese tart with caramelised red onion marmalade to begin, followed by a tranche of seared monkfish in lemon oil with minted peas. Then comes Lakeland beef for main, served with charlottes roasted in the skins, and parsnip purée topped with smoked black pudding crumble, in thyme-scented red wine jus. Things come to rest with a featherlight chocolate brownie, Belgian truffle and white chocolate ice cream.
