The original mansion was built in the 1780s and is immaculately restored, while the high-ceilinged restaurant overlooks the garden from what was a pair of drawing rooms. The cooking is based on native produce and a range of neat ideas, and it really makes an impact. One novel and effective starter is trout gravad lax, rillette and smoked trout velouté with pickled cucumber. Move on to a tasting plate of duck - breast, confit leg and a tranche of foie gras - with cherry sauce and a side plate of broccoli, asparagus and mashed potato. Finish with orange cake with a matching ice cream and a poached pear.
