Built in the 1820s on the site of a medieval abbey, Belleek is more manor house than castle, but altogether splendid even so. The style is sophisticated, but retains a foothold in tradition, offering first the house pie of pork in pork-fat pastry with orange and ginger marmalade, or a bowl of forest and hedgerow soup, all wild mushrooms, nettle pesto and garlic. Seafood could be Mulranny trout in lemon and dill, or turbot in capers and champagne, while the beef fillet in flamed in Jameson's and served with a peppery jus. At the end comes caramel cheesecake with peanut ice cream and blueberries, or lemon and passionfruit tart.
