The crenellated Victorian fantasy of Abbeyglen Castle basks in sweeping views, but is just a five-minute walk from the bustle of Clifden village. The decor is bold and bright with artworks on cherry-red walls, crystal chandeliers, and a pianist tinkles away. Expect classic cooking built on excellent local materials. Fish and seafood stars - fresh oysters, seafood chowder, or poached salmon with hollandaise - while meat could turn up as slow-roasted suckling pig teamed with braised belly pork, apple chutney, celeriac crisps and a grain mustard reduction. Puddings finish slap in the comfort zone with the likes of chocolate bread-and-butter pudding or rhubarb crumble with crème anglaise.
