Straight-talking seafood cooking next to the fish market

AA Inspector

Only the high sea wall separates The Tolcarne Inn from the crashing waves on the other side, adding considerable charm to this traditional stone-built pub next to Newlyn's bustling fish market. Close links with local fishermen mean the day's catch dictates what appears on the chalkboard menu. Pan-fried fillet of mackerel turns up in a starter with fine beans and pickled mushrooms, followed perhaps by a juicy fillet of hake teamed with cavolo nero, roasted beetroot, creamed potato, smoked bacon and hazelnuts. Dessert could be strawberries Escoffier with lemon rosemary and mascarpone ice cream.
