There's a stylishly upmarket vibe at this seaside hotel with its hip-looking bar and nautically themed restaurant. The kitchen buys materials solely from local producers, and its passion for cooking is palpable in well-executed, succulent seared scallops, served with celeriac purée, delicate vanilla dressing and apple and hazelnut salad, and game and bacon terrine with pickled mushrooms and onion chutney. There's perfectly timed seared venison steak, with parsnips, red cabbage and silky mash, and a smoked haddock and mussel chowder for baked hake fillet. The momentum carries into desserts: perhaps peanut butter parfait with moreish chocolate sorbet and chunks of banana, and lemon and blackberry posset with mascarpone cream.
