Topped by a mop of thatch and with a fabulous garden and terrace, Balsham's village hostelry has its own-brewed real ale on tap and a choice of eating spaces from the tucked-away nooks around the bar to a barn with a lofty vaulted ceiling and chunky solid oak tables. Start, perhaps, with pan-fried pigeon breast with beetroot, lardons, pine nuts and balsamic-dressed rocket. Move on to braised lamb shank with Parmentier potatoes, pearl barley, root vegetables and mint jus, or pancetta-wrapped monkfish tail with curried clam cream and vanilla mashed potato. Finish with an inventive clementine and star anise tarte Tatin with pomegranate seeds and crème anglaise.
