The interior of this 17th-century pub has acquired a bit of a contemporary sheen while retaining the soul of the place, with a lounge bar serving real ales and a cosy snug as well as a smart restaurant. Expect classy pub classics and sandwiches in the bar (or garden), while the restaurant ups the ante with the likes of mosaic of game with apple chutney, or Scotch egg with parsley aïoli. Successful main courses range from roast fillet of cod with saffron-infused shellfish chowder and baby winter vegetables, to chicken chablisiènne with mash and carrots, while among puddings may be lemon tart with cherry sorbet.
