In the village of Melbourn, close to the borders of Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire and Essex, Sheene Mill is only a few minutes from Cambridge itself. The waterway and pond are reminders of this 16th-century mill’s former life and there are glorious gardens next to the River Mel. The restaurant is overseen by an engaging team and the kitchen takes a contemporary approach. Butter-roasted lobster ravioli is matched with soused fennel, lemon verbena gel and lobster bisque. Chargrilled lamb cannon with crispy shepherd’s pie, goats’ cheese mash and Roscoff onions is a robust main course option, with a retro Black Forest gâteaux among the desserts.
