Contemporary cooking in rambling old coaching inn

Vegetarian menu
Private dining
Wines by the glass

This coaching inn in a charming village may date from 1642 but its kitchen turns out bright ideas in the contemporary mode. Pulled pork and apple terrine with piccalilli and a deep-fried egg has a good balance of flavours among starters, or there might be broad bean risotto in garlic and parsley butter topped with seared scallops. Main courses run to roast chicken breast with tarragon sauce, baby vegetables and dauphinoise, or loin of cod on tomato and basil sauce with butternut squash risotto and wilted spinach. Presentation is a forte, seen in a dessert of peanut butter parfait with hot toffee sauce garnished with slices of marinated plums.
