Imaginative modern cooking in a former school building

Low ceilings, wood flooring and cheerful art on sky-blue walls create an ambience of stylish, intimate rusticity at this former grammar school, while friendly staff contribute to the congenial atmosphere. The kitchen makes a virtue of simplicity, working an intelligent vein of appealing modern British ideas. Get going with duck liver parfait brûlée with kumquat compôte and cornichons and move on to fillet of stone bass imaginatively partnered by confit squid, risotto nero, charred leeks and saffron, or noisette and shoulder of lamb with aubergines, turnips and pressed new potatoes. To finish, lemon tart is served to good effect with orange sorbet and raspberries.
