The original Elizabethan manor was destroyed by fire, so today’s house is a handsome piece of Georgian architecture instead, with suitably formal public rooms. The elegant Berry’s Restaurant with its central chandelier looks out over the six acres of landscaped grounds, with huge French doors opening onto the terrace. The menu touches base with feel-good favourites, while offering something a little more refined and creative. Grilled mackerel is matched with lemon and chilli syrup and a zingy escabèche, with tender duck breast starring in a main course with Puy lentils and a full-flavoured port jus. Warm doughnuts are at the heart of a well-made dessert with banana cream and chocolate ganache.
