Confident country cooking in rural inn

Wines by the glass

This rural red-brick country inn is worth tracking down for its proper pubby vibe and unpretentious approach to modern British cooking. The owners, Mike and Katie Robinson, source their produce with care, but what makes the Pot Kiln stand out from the herd is its passion for game. Start with a classic chicken liver and foie gras parfait with toasted brioche and chutney, or get stuck straight into a wild venison Scotch egg from the bar menu. Main-course beef cheeks are braised for 10 hours and served with mash, black cabbage and slow-cooked shallots, or there may be pan-fried hake with fennel rösti, roasted vine tomatoes, spinach and basil.
